Hi, I’m Marcel!

I am an associate professor (universitetslektor) in the LiU NLP Group at Linköping University, Sweden 🇸🇪, where I do research and teaching within computational linguistics (CL) and natural language processing (NLP).

My research interests revolve around multilingual NLP, evaluation and interpretability, and NLP applications. I am interested in analysing and improving models for lesser-resourced languages, and in studying how linguistic phenomena interact with language technology. I also have an interest in applying NLP technology to problems within the digital humanities (e.g. historical documents) or computational social sciences. Most recently, I worked in the EU-funded research project TrustLLM, leading a work package on multilingual NLP, and working on adaptation and modularization of multilingual large language models (LLMs). I also work within Språkbanken CLARIN, the Swedish node of the CLARIN infrastructure.

I volunteer as Site Development Lead for the ACL Anthology, contributing to the site infrastructure and developing the acl-anthology Python library. I currently act as the editor-in-chief of the Northern European Association for Language Technology (NEALT). I am also affiliated faculty of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

Previously, I was assistant professor at the Jönköping AI Lab (JAIL). As a postdoc in the CoAStaL NLP group at University of Copenhagen, Denmark, I obtained a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (MSCA-IF) to work on morphologically-informed representations for NLP. Before that, I worked on various research projects related to computational historical linguistics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, where I also obtained my PhD degree in computational linguistics.
